Super lice are here and are only going to get stronger. What are super lice you might ask? Well, they are lice that are immune to all the over the counter lice chemical shampoos as well as the prescription lice medication. Some studies have shown that 100% of the lice found in California, Texas, and Florida are the chemical resistant super lice. This means that when you treat with these chemicals they do nothing and you put your loved one at risk of an adverse reaction.
From 1945 to 1975 there was very little head lice in the United States. The reason for this is because of the widespread use of the pesticide DDT. It was initially used with great effect to combat malaria, typhus, and the other insect-borne human diseases among both military and civilian populations and for insect control in crop and livestock production, institutions, homes, and gardens. A byproduct of this use was very little head lice. In 1975 DDT was banned and every since there has been a increase of head lice in the US population.
The increase of head lice in the US also resulted in the increased use of over the counter lice shampoos. The more is was used and used incorrectly the more increasing number of head lice that are resistant to pyrethrum based insecticides.
The solution to all this is to rethink head lice treatment. Instead of Kill! Kill! Kill! we need to think Remove Remove Remove! Getting the lice out the hair is the best way to treat head lice. I know that goes against your very core but it is the only treatment that gets the whole lice life cycle out of the hair at the same time. A good metal lice comb, conditioner and technique is all you need. The most low tech lice treatment but the most effective when treating super lice.
